Bonnie O'Connell is an award-winning book artist and educator with over forty years of experience in the media of book arts, letterpress printing and collage. Her work addresses the material culture of prints and books, often deconstructing and celebrating printed ephemera, the book as object, and charged images from past and present. She directs The Fine Arts Press, where she teaches courses in the book arts (letterpress printing, typography, bookbinding and papermaking), alternative media, and color theory. Her essays on the book arts have appeared in the journals Books at Iowa, and Abracadabra. She has produced fine press limited editions of contemporary poetry for Abattoir Editions, and has contributed prints to several recent portfolio exchanges including Sock & Kiss from the International Print Center in New York and Pandora’s Box from The Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts.
Born and raised in the United States, Bonnie Quirk was influenced by Post-War Modernism in the 1950s. This era saw the beginnings of abstract expressionism and action painting, while figurative artists explored ideas related to spirituality and the sublime.
Quirk’s works are informed by these broader movements, but her style is distinct in its use of color and texture. Rather than attempting to capture a single moment or subject, her paintings are about the whole of a scene, capturing a moment in time that is both ephemeral and eternal.
Her paintings are a meditation on بانی چاپ life's whimsy. Whether it is the joy of a horse foal running through a pasture, or the symphony of wind in the trees on a summer afternoon, she captures these moments to remind us to take a deep breath and enjoy the beauty of nature.
In addition to creating her own art, Bonnie has worked professionally in the fields of costume design and graphic design. She has designed for numerous Broadway shows, including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom with Whoopi Goldberg and Charles Dutton, King Hedley II with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Leslie Uggams, and Marie Christine with Mandy Patinkin and Eartha Kitt. She has also done work for regional theatre, dance, television, and commercials.
Bonnie's paintings are a reflection of her life in rural New York state. She is inspired by her childhood and the landscapes that surround her, and she successfully transfers these memories onto canvas in a unique folk art style. Her work evokes hard work and family, highlighting different seasons and milestone events. The paintings are made to inspire the viewer to appreciate their life and to live each day to its fullest.
